First Union African Baptist Church is located on Daufuskie Island, one of the barrier islands off the South Carolina Coast. Not accessible by bridge, our ministry is a unique experience.
The development of First Union African Baptist Church, now listed as an historical landmark, began in 1879 when John I. Stoddard divided the Mary Field plantation into lots and sold 12 acres to former slaves for the purpose of building a church and developing a cemetery. The land was purchased in 1881 for $82 and the first church was built. The original church building burned in 1884 and was rebuilt in 1885. This year we will celebrate our 125th anniversary.
We enjoy a diverse membership that includes native islanders, part time residents and relocated full-time residents. Because of the nature of the island we are also blessed with visitors year-round. Our Pastor-Teacher is Dr. Clarence Edmondson, who received his Masters of Divinity at Lutheran Theoligical Seminary after completing three years of Bible College.
Worship Service is at 9:45 am. Holy Communion is on the 4th Sunday. Two Bible Study’s weekly. On Thursdays we “Get to Know the Bible” from 6:15 to 7:15 pm and on Sundays Adult Bible Study is at 9:15 am. On the 5th Sundays we are blessed with our musician, Mr. Bill Alston of High Point, North Carolina.
We look forward to sharing our worship experience with you.
